Day One Shoot

Day One Shoot
The first day of the shoot was very successful. We used the hours in the studio to our schedule and it was very accurate and precise.
The first day was very fun to shoot and we got a rage of angles and shots which I will be able to use. It was successful because we achieved what we aimed for and it was a good day.
We collabourated well together discussed the different angles and how it looked. We needed to change the microphone because it didn't work well with my performance in the video. It was good as we worked together to keep to our schedule and to stay on time. Above are pictures which we took throughout the day and the different jobs which we had to do.

Preparations

These are the final conclusions about filming of my music video. It includes all the key features like the the location, costumes, actors and Props. Its important for me to be clear about all the things which I will need to have and be prepared for.

Shot List

This is the shot list which contains all the shots which we will be filming and what will be seen in all the shots. Its important to have the key points and moments in the in video.

This is our first version of the shot list and includes all the main components which we are going to include. Below is the finalised shot list.

Shot no. / Shot / Location, actors, props.

1. Close up - Shes not looking at the camera; shes looking out of the window. It will be in Mrs Baldwin house. We'll need water to make it look like shes crying and I'll be the only one in the shot.

2. Close up - It will of a notebook and like a tear dropping ontp the page on the word 'Numb'. It will be in the house and will need a notebook, pen and water.

3. Mid shot - Establishing the the scene and we see her singing into a microphone with her, looking and listening to the music; this will be in black and white. It will be in Park High Studio and I'm in the shot and there won't be any props but there will be background Mise en scene which shows the studio.

4a) Long shot - To establish scene and following them as they are walking on a bench. It will be in centenary Park. There will be two actors, Frankie and George holding hands and in love. There won't be any props in the shot.

b) Mid shot - In front of them sitting on the bench.

5. Close up - Up to her face and want her to be the main focus in the shot. It will be in the studio it will be from a different angle and closer up.

6. Long shot - It will be from behind the TV looking at the them together. The lighting will be dark and the lighting will come from just the TV, like watching a movie. It will be at the house on the sofa cuddling and becing really close.

7. Mid shot - Back into the studio, from a different angle onto the other side.

8. Long shot - From the side and quite low down. It will be in the Park on the bench and we watch George get up and he leaves Frankie.

9. Close up - Back into the studio from a high angle to show the her.

1oa) Mid shot - walking into the house. She walks into the house and closes the door. I look happy looking down and holding a photo frame of George and myself.

b) Point of view - Looking at the stairs and seeing clothes scattered up the stairs. After I'm in the house, the audience doesn't see me. They see the clothes on the stairs of a girl and a boy indicating he cheated on her.

c) Close up - My hand starts to drop with the photoframe. It has to be a close up of my hand clear and obvious that its my hand.

d) Extreme Close up - The frame dropping to the floor and smashing.

11) Mid shot - Back to the studio to watch me perform.

12)
Close Up - Back to the house to see me in disbelief and shocked.
This is a video of a practice shot which we want to include. But unfortunately it will be very hard to achieve because of the area which we will be in; a small music studio. We managed to do this shot by sitting on a chair and moving around and controlling the movement and the camera. I'm quite sad that I won't be able to include this shot because I think its quite a powerful shot and it matches the song, furthermore its a professional shot which builds the atmosphere in the song.

This video is a practice of how I would like the frame to drop. Its important to get practice for the final shoot and to get an accurate view of the shot which I would like to see. This shot works really well, and intertexuality here as it has been done in several other music videos, but also in movies and TV shows to indicate an emotion of shock and devestation.

Timeline

This is my first initial idea as to how I wanted my video to be set up and put together. It begins with a CU shot of her face and you can see her crying this leads into her writing up lyrics to the song but we don't see all of them. But because she is crying I want to include a shot of a tear spilling onto the page showing her saddness and the link back to the title of the song. We are the introduced to the artist by a MS/LS of her singing in the studio. At certain moments in the song to show their relationship and to show the narrative there will be clips of the couple and happier times whe they were together. This then leads onto the cheating section; originally I wanted their to be a fight and arguement, but this wouldn't have worked well so I decided to try something more symbolic by having clothes on the stairs which indicate the cheating. I've used intertexuality here as this has been done in different movies and TV shows. This leads into a picture breakig and dropping of the two of them together. This shows their relationship and how they were together but it also shows her disappointment, shock and upset. Again I have used intertexuality as it is iconic and displays the emotions well. It then goes back to the studio to show the emotion of the song and the words that shes saying. I want to show the narrative and inter cross it with performance to show emotion, but also so I would represent both Indie music and R&B music.

Interlinking Ideas

Linkin Park - Numb

Because I have choosen a cover version of Linkin Park Numb it's important to keep the audience of this song avaliable to us as well. To be able to make this sog avaliable to both an indie and R&B audience the video will have to apppeal to both audiences. To do this, i looked at this video and decided to take to studio effect which they have. However, ours will be different because it will be set in a studio which is linked to R&B artists. The crossing between the storyline and the performance is also similar to how I want my video to be presented; however, I will link it back to R&B by having a storyline to do with relatioships.
Its important to not loose any of the audience so linking between the video and the idea of the video is how I plan to keep the audience as wide as possible.

Marketing

She would be part of the independent rock label ‘The Nothing Room’ because it produces indie/rock artist and it have helped to produced hudreds of artist similar to mine. I think it would be ideal because they arfe an independent label.

MTV

This is one of the biggest Music channels which was established in New York in 1981. The main aim was to watch music videos. MTV went through many different stages which affected the development of music videos and breaking stereotypical barriers.

It began with playing purely rock and white artist like Blink 182, Bon Jovi and Duran Duran. This was because the audience enjoyed these artists. When the new artist began to emerge like Rick James began to be aired to the black audience along with Michael Jackson.

This lead to the development into black artist being established and the introduction to R&B and hip hop music genre. This became a popular genre and the essence of rock was loss. But they then re promoted Rock but the audience and viewing rating weren’t as high as before but they continued to air it during the off peak times.

MTV then developed into creating TV shows as music video ratings declined. As MTV is known world wide it then gained broadcasting rights to show live concerts and holding award shows. MTV has developed at an alarming rate in thirty years ad it is a very good channel to broad cast an up and coming new star allowing the audience to view her.

But that would not be the only audience which she will be played to. Because MTV has a very large audience, I will target more specific channels like Vimeo which plays to my target audience as it plays many Indie music videos.

Performing at festivals like Reading, Leeds and Nottingham willl help the name to become more welll known and will draw in large audiences because of the amount of people that go to watch. And within Nottingham perform at Rock city which is a rock and Indie club which would be perfect to help her become well established as an Indie Artist.

Advertising in magazines such as NME which is directly aimed at my target audience which willl help to create hype and attention. An interview with images would be appropriate but the images will have to be linked to her star image.

Using the radio and performing on stations like X fm and Radio One which would be more open to playing new tracks by new up coming artist. They would appeal to the target audience and would recieve critism and the album and single would be promoted on a large audience scale.

Performance Videos

Beyonce - If I was a Boy

The effects in this video which represents the saddness and the hurt which she feels. And you truely understand the feeling which she feels and the words that she is saying. The black and white theme helps the audience with the feeling and the emotion of the song. I would like to include this effect in my movie because I think it would be a good way to portray the emotion of the song which I have choosen. The tone is similar to the song which I have choosen and this is why I would like to include this feature in my music video.

Christina Aguilera - The Voice Within

This video was shot in one take and one film and this is extremely effective and clever. The effect of the black and white illustrates the inspiration which she is trying to show. There is a cirling affect within this video which I would like to try and incorperate into my own video. I would try and do this with a chair and someone holding the camera steady this would be shot in the studio. I think this would create the same effect which I want to portray, but also it matches the song smoothly.

Eminem - When I'm Gone

This shot is the same shot or similar to one which I would
like have in my music video. It is very effective to show that the emotion from the writing of the words onto a piece of paper to put it into a song. It is a perfect way to express the true feeling behind the song and it helps to explain the song and the narrative behind it.
This shot has an effect which I like which I would like to include in the shots which are about the narrative. It helps to demonstrate the idea she is looking back on the past. But also the shot is in colour which I'd also like to use in my video.

Shania Twain - When You Kiss Me

This outfit in this video is the type of outfit which would like to have in my video. Its a casual outfit but its also quite sexy at the same time. I think it helps to indicate the atmosphere which it is trying to show. Although, the emotion will be different within my video here she is cheerful whereas in my video she will be angry and sad. But its the kind of outfit which you will have around your house and thats what I would like to have within my video.

Justin Bieber - U smile

This video is similar to how I would like to intercut narrative with a performance base video. Although the majority of the video is performance base there is a narrative behind the storyline and this is seen closely linked with the song. It is a clear and simple way to show the full effect of the song and how to connect with the audience in more ways than just one. The video should be a way which the audience can connect with the song and feel the words by watching. I would like the audience of my video to feel like this.

Research on Music Channels

Performance Video Characteristics

As I enter into the planning stages of my music video I need to decide on a video genre of the video. Its important that the video is related to the song the emotion which I try to portray. Therefore, I have decided that a performance video would be the most interactive and personal genre which would show the fully emotion. Hence, looking at a range of performance videos will highlight key characteristics which I will need to include in my video in order for t to be successful.

All American Rejects - Dirty Little Secret

While this is not the same genre as my peice of music, it is a performance based video and displays a range of emotion through the visuals. There are many close ups of the band and them playing their instruments, but also as the group as a whole. When their is close ups of the lead singer you can see into his eyes and that is a strong and in depth emotion he is feels. Its important for the audience to feel the same way which the performer feels about the song and the words behind the song. It won't work if the song doesn't show the right emotion. There are snaps of the secrets between the close ups of the band and it is related straight to the song, and I think this is a key characteristic which I would like to include within my video. It works so that the whole video isn't just about the band and its about the meaning behind the song.

Mariah Carey - We Belong Together

Now this video is a completely different music genre to the previous song, but it a a performance video. In this video, there are snap shots from a narrative of a story because that is what the song requires in order for it to work and be successful. Their is a range of locations within this video unlike 'Dirty Little Secret' and I will need to take into consideration which one would be most approprite to my song. As this is an R&B song, I saw that there were more close ups of her face and her body to attract a mass audience. Furthmore, within in the video she has used a well known and admire actor, Wentworth Miller, to consume the female audience to watch her video. This would be difficult for me, but I could incooperate a narrivitve if it matched my song.

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars

Again, in comparison this video is a different performance video and is based one lead charcter and the camera is like following him as he goes around him street to trains to escalators. A key moments in the song there are specific shots which highlight the lyrics and the emotion. As there isn't a lot happening in the video it presents the emotion through the dull colours and lighting. There are no bright colours in the video and video is quite plain and it focuses on the emotion of the song forcing the audience to listen to the words and what the band is trying to say.

Goodwins Conventions

Lady GaGa - Just Dance

Relationship between the lyrics and the visuals
In the opening verse there are key moments when the song lyrics match up to the visuals. The lyrics are;

How does he twist the dance?
Can't find my drink o man
Where are my keys?
I've lost my phone, phone.

And from these screen shots they suttly amplify the lyrics to portray what shes saying with the actions. As we go through the first verse up to the chorus there are many ways which the lyrics are illustrated by the visuals. Melina Matsoukas, the director, has helped to represent the lyrics with other people doing the actions and not just Lady Gaga. This doesn't mean that Lady Gaga is not seen in the video much because she is as it is a performance video and dance video. The visuals enhance the idea of the song as its a pop/club song so there is a lot of dancing and there are iconic symbols such as the disco ball which is directly linked with dancing and clubs. There are two types of dancing in the video, non cheorographed and cherographed, as this is Lady Gaga's first video she has to make an impression and she is doing so by be a singer and a dancer.

Relationship between the music and the visuals

The base and beat of the music are key moments when the dancing takes place. This
correlation with the lyrics as well because the words are saying 'just dance' and the dancing begins on the beat of the music.
Also nearer the end of the music she plays the keyboard at the same time that it is being played in the music background. Mostly there is a correlation between the lyrics, music and visuals as it is an upbeat tone and song and needs to encourage what the song is saying. This video is well edited as well with a few effects for example near the end when the beat becomes more jaggered it speeds up and there are a range of frames together fast.

Music genres have their own video style
This Video clearly mirrors the dance/pop music genre which dancing and a large crowd of people in one place. However, unlike most pop/dance videos this is set in a house rather than a club which is unusual but it creates a more fun and lively atmosphere as the audience can assume they know each other and they are more like friends. Iconically, there are a ra
nge of outfits and Lady Gaga, in the video, is wearing a lot of sparkle and glitter which further indicates the pop/dance genre. There is a lot of interaction with the oppisite sex as well which in a common trait in dance/pop videos and their is some sexy dancing within this video.

Lots of close ups of the Artist for the Record Label
Interscope Records is the record company which she recorded with. There are a range of close ups, from when she is a room singing with a microphone to being outside in a mini pool. She is at the front of the dancing and she is where the audience see her. She is in the middle of the screen alot so the audience immediately are drawn to her and her strange outfits catch the attention of the audience further making her the center of the whole video.

Star develops her own star iconography
Now days Lady Gaga is known for her crazy, wild and bizarre videos. Her oldest song, I think, have ranged causing her to create her own star image. She is known for wearing strange outfits for example turning up at the 2010 MTV music Video awards wearing a Meat outfit. She has created her own fan base and her own style which is replicated amoung her videos.

Intertexuality

Lady Gaga is never unique and this is seen through her one of a kind videos. I persoanally can't find many links between her videos and many other different texts. She creates her own style and this is reflected in her videos. Thus concluding there isn't much obvious intertexuality.
