Goodwin's Conventions

Rihanna - Please Don't Stop the Music

I think this video is a perfect example of the creation of Goodwin's conventions. From the beginning to the end of the video there is clear interlinks between the lyrics, music and the visuals. They interlock perfectly in order for the video to be upbeat, fast and interactive.
The first point which Goodwin makes is that there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, this is indicated in this video at points in the song when there are key words which can indicate moves e.g - "acting naughty" this point there is a long shot of Rihanna with a boy and close together which can show them getting along and it shows the connection between her and the boy. The song is about not stopping the music and the video is a club/performance video. As its a club video there is club dancing and its jumping and arms up showing their enjoyment and not wanting it to end. This particular background matches the song and shows them having a good time. The song is fast tempo song and the dancing and atmosphere of the visuals gets you want to get up and join in with her.
Next, he says there is a relationship between music and visuals and this is seen clearly at the beginning at the start of the beat and the video flash's with the beat of the music to black and shows her journey into her club. This connection with the visuals and the music is established from the start and is continued to the end where the music is faster and the editing needs to be fast and snappy in order to keep up with the song. Also the song is a club song so its set in a club to create the right atmosphere for the song in order to sell the song to the target audience.
He says that particular genres might have their own music video style and iconography, and within this video this is seen through the sexy outfits of Rihanna. This song was released to change her image and to create a sexy, male attention artist. She has cut her hair shorter and is wearing tight fitted clothing to highlight her figure. Normally in Club songs skin will be bare to impress the other gender, this is quite iconic as this is seen from Kylie Minogue. As its a club anthem the setting is relevant again showing that the video is directly related to the conventions and all aspects of Goodwin's conventions have been related to the setting.
He says there is a demand on the part of the record company for lots of close ups of the main artist/vocalist and videos must sell. There are many different shots of Rihanna, from in the toilet checking her hair to dancing with a guy and on a sofa performing the song. The label would love that the video is based about Rihanna and herself. It attracts the target audience to watch the video and it influences the audience and the as part of the audience I immediately make a connection with the song to get up and want to dance.

The star develops there own iconography and becomes there star image. This is the start of Rihanna transformation as over the next releases of her songs she develops into a sexy 'chick' and more relatable to an older audience. She becomes an icon for younger girls, but is also seen as a top ten sexy women for men. Her iconography changes the video to makes it available to a wider audience causing more people to want to watch the video and listen, buy and play the song.
There is likely to be reference to voyeurism e.g screens within screens. We see Rihanna looking to a mirror and we are watching her reflection not her, but we can see her moving. This is a mid shot of her and the camera work is done from a range of angles.

There are likely to be intertexual references, this isn't clear in the video but it can be reference back to her first single, Pon De Replay, which is also set in a club and is a club anthem.
So overall, Rihanna's video is evidence for Goodwin's conventions and ideas. It is a successful video as has 125, 016, 702 views on YouTube, you shows the popularity of the video and the target audience are attracted to the videos.

Moodboard

This is a mood board which expresses the target music genre which I want to portray. The genre is Indie/Rock and this moodboard portrays the ideas which i think are expressed through indie music and what I hope to replicate into my music video. As you can see there is a lot of emotion in the song and this is very similar to the indie genre and I will need to have this present in my video.

First Thoughts about 'Numb'

This is a wordle which shows my first thoughts about the song 'Numb' and the words I'd like to portray into my music video.

Music Tracks

To make my music video there were many different genres which I could look into inorder to choose one song. I broke the choice down by choosig a genre and looking through the range of songs in that genre. However, I had to take into consideration when the song was released and the video. I firstly looked into Dance/Pop genre to create a fast editing and the use of effects to create my video.
The first song was The Ting Tings - Thats Not My Name, as its a fast upbeat song with a rather unpopular video which isn't well known. There could be potenially a lot of fast changes and quick editing to match the lyrics and the beat of the song. There is a very strong beat to the sog which will help to make the changes easily to match.

The next song I considered was Cascada - Everytimg we touch, this is an extremely up beat sog whish is also quite old. Furthermore, the video isn't very popular either, but the song is very popular and well known. It would be more difficult to get permission because of copy right issues. But this is a upbeat fast tempo and I would be able to make a performance video.

I then decided to vary my genre, and I then looked at Shontelle - T-shirt, this is a slow R&B song and the aim of this video is to portray the emotion. There would be slow changes but the lyrics help to create different shots and key moments for key shots. This video would be performance with slower changes and less affects and would be about getting the emotion of the song across to the target audience.

Another slow pop song I looked at is
Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me, this song is very emotional but it wouldn't be a good song to do because the video is a narrative video and is well known. It would be inappropriate to do this song as the lyrics are quite important. But I really love the song and I think its important to like the song so that you are commited to making the best video you can.

To look for an original song, I used BBC live lounge which is where other artist do there own version of other peoples song. We found many different songs such as
The Saturdays - Beggin, Lily Allen - Naive, Example - Tik Tok and Dizzee Rascal - Thats not my name. But then I came across the song which I have decided to use Jamelia - Numb, this is an R&B artist covering an Indie song. Its slow and requires imagination as it is a hybrid of genres of music allowing us to be more creative. Furthermore there isn't a video to this version of the song and it would be easier to ask permission. Also this is one of my favourite songs and this means that I am passionate about wanting to pursue this song as my music video.

Lip Syncing Activity

This is my first attempt at matching the words to the visuals on the beat and the moments as to which it does this. I think I've done this successfully and I can do this well. I feel comfortable attempting to do this for my music video. I learnt about using markers to match it up and finding that the exact moment is crucial to make the video successful.

First Music and Beat Exercise

This is one of the first exercises which I have done where I have had clips and and music and I had to put them to the beat of the music. I think I have done this successfully and I've worked hard to having the visuals to match the moments of the song to put it together so it flows. I enjoyed this exercise as the first exercise to take part and I think I achieved the aim of it.

My Favourite Music Videos

Bonkers - Dizzee Rascal

This is one of my favourite videos because it is well constructed. It is rather peculiar which appeals to the target audience. As I am part of the target audience I am very attracted to the video and feel that it keeps the audience entranced but also keeps the audience excited. It makes you want to join in and get involved. It is a performance and gag video and there isn't much narrative behind the song. It shows him being slightly crazy but the effects help to maximise this idea.
There are so many different effects in the video which make it creative and original. The effects create a reality world where Dizzee Rascal goes round.
The effects make a live and entertaining atmosphere and it gains the auidences attention from the start. Dizzee Rascal uses the effects to portray his world as bonkers and exciting. His radical costume changes further enhance this idea of being bonkers and he does things which people wouldn't expect and this is attracting the target audience to watch it further. Dizzee Rascal has a reputation of having strange videos and quite interesting for example Dizzee's older song which has a fun video.
Using other people in the video allows there to be a connection to the song. As its a very upbeat and fast tempo song, a party will be associated with the song. This is appealing to the young target audience. In the video there is dancing it ecourages the audience to get up and start dancing. However, is continuously encourage dacing during his music, as his previous song in the video there is a lot of dancing.
As we go through the video he changes his costumes and it goes from day to night. We see him throughout the day and travel with him.
This is one of my favourite videos and i throughly enjoy it and find it very upbeat and exciting.

My Favourite Music Videos

Eminem ft Rihanna - Love the Way you Love
This video is currently my favourite video because I think it is a very powerful video as I feel that Sanaa Hamri (director) quote "A video is one that makes the song go from good to great" is perfect for this song.
It is a hybrid video with the genres performance, story and part gag. The video has performances of Eminem in a field o his own, and the video and lyrics combine together to tell a story between Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox, whom portray a couple i a love hate relatioship. It interwines with happier times and also sad and angry times which further presents the audience with an insight to their story.
Here is an image where 'Gag' is used in the video because she is holding fire. This is the first momet which we see fire with Megan Fox and she seems sad and is representing a sad and lost woman. As Rihanna sings "I like the way it hurts" this image comes up and I think it is a powerful beginning to the video. However at the end she puts the fire and instead we see her whole body on fire along with Eminem and Dominic Monaghan on fire. They all look scared and it ties in with the lyrics and the chorous it links together and I think that the visuals at the end match in harmony with the song; thus creating a story as well.

There is a range of violence in this video and I feel that its illustarted well from both the female and male and the amount of violence links to the lyrics and in my opinion I feel that it creates a better atmosphere for the video.

I think that the video creates a atmosphere for the song with symbolises a point of view and I think it can be interpreted in a range of ways. As part of the audience the response which I get is the wating to watch it again and again. It presents an opinion which I think is relatable to people in different people in situations. I feel that it pulls on the heart strings and it highlights the passion and hate in relationships. This is my favourite image in the video because it pictures all the emotions. With the fire showing anger, hatred and threatening. The love is shown as they are together and will stand together through it all.
